Is anybody home? How 'bout my 2-cents?

Ok, I've been bouncing between here and Facebook and trying to get the hang of FB, but it's frustrating as all get-out. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, or have missed the way to navigate ... I dunno. On THIS site ... when a new post is made, or when there's been a response to a post, it automatically moves to the top of the page and is highlighted until I read it. On FB, I "usually" get an email notice that there's been a post made (or something like that) and I go to the FB page to start weeding through the threads TRYING to find the new response/thread. If there are a lot of responses, I have to dig through, find there are "3 more responses" ... open that ... slide on down the thread to find "2 more responses" ... open that. Frankly, for this old fart, it's a royal pain in the ass! Plus, the threads stay where they are. If there's a response to a thread started 6 months ago, I guess you just have to find the frigging thing.

I'm going with whatever route this group takes and if you jump off a cliff, I'll jump right along with you ... but TBH, keeping up on the FB posts is a royal PITA and not really a lot of fun (for me anyway).

Ok, flame away at this old fart ... I'm weak and vulnerable so don't burn me too badly. I guess it's just a sign of the times and I need to be flexible and adjust. That doesn't mean I have to like it. The "work" involved just takes some of the fun out of the whole thing IMHO.

Hey Thump. I haven't been on here much lately. The passing of The Captain just kinda took the heart out of me. Never met the man in person but I felt a close affection for him anyway. Strange how that works. Feels like we have passed a milestone and not a good one.

As for FB - nope, won't be doing that. Tried it ages ago and not for me. I hope this place survives in some format or another as it is kinda unique and would be a shame to see it disappear.

Yeppers, same here. I get an email saying one of you dingleberries has posted something on FB, I go to the page and it's something from yesterday ... or the day before ... and as you say, I've already read it. I know Bucky refuses to use FB as well as Sunny ... now it appears Johnboy is in the same boat. There has to be a more user friendly site IMO, but I don't know squat about this crap. I'm just a PUmpHeAd.

I will continue to check in at both places. Maybe it’ll keep on keeping on without a technical admin. Or maybe one will show up. We’ve been in this shape for at least a year and nothing has crashed.

In the meantime we could solve the whole thing if somebody knew of a way to host the site some other way.

As a side note, there is already stuff posted on the FB GH site that would discourage anyone with social media worries from their work.

Yep, the whole point of this site from the very beginning, was to get out from under All Outdoors' thumb and poor ol' Alison was caught in the middle of it all ... either discipline us deplorables or lose her job. FB has rules and I don't really know how far we can push them. My main complaint is what I stated above ... it's just NOT the kind of format we're looking for IMHO. I'll go on record right now and say I hate it! Once you post something, it's lost in the mumble-jumble after a week or so. Make a comment on an old post and nobody is ever going to find it. We may be able to keep bandaids on this site if we get all the info we need from Cappy's files. I think we have a few qualified people ... the hard part is finding one who will take the time to straighten out any screw-ups that come along. But, as you say, the place has been running itself for a LONG time ... I think ever since Foo and Co9 slammed the backdoor in the Ruskie's faces. They were trying to influence our voting ya' know.

Speaking of .... I just now received an email letting me know LJ commented on something I'd said on FB. Again, like a blind sheep, I strolled over there to see what he'd posted and it was a comment he'd made 20 hours ago! Of course, I already read it yesterday. Aggravating.

I've had a FB page for years and just don't like the format ... at all. I set it up one weekend, but never finished it as I had zero interest. I just use it to keep track of everybody's birthdays.

I thought I replied to this. I don't see it.

Did Cappy passing mean this site has to go away? I'm missing something. ??????????????

I don't Facebook. I tried to. I won't ever try again. Biggest pile of crap any IT person ever designed. More flaws than I can imagine. How the world is addicted is beyond me. But no, I won't be back to try that. Someday no one will be on it. That's my prediction, and I'm sticking to it. Before that occurs, a LOT of people are going to be suffering.

Bucky, I really don't know where we stand right now. It's hosted by Go-Daddy and Cappy has all the financial info, passwords, etc. I'm not sure where we stand with the Domain, but again, he had all that info. I do know Gary wanted to retain the Domain if Cappy ever decided he no longer wanted it, but I also don't know where we stand with him on that matter. The bills are paid for at least another year, so we're good for now. What many worry about is the fact we no longer have a resident techie available if we should have any problems with the site .... but then again ... we haven't had any issues in quite a few years.

Some here are in love with FB, to others it's the Debbil (I'm in that boat), but it's simple and there are no problems maintaining the site (or expenses). Personally, I'll follow the crowd wherever they decide to go, but imo, Facebook sucks big giant weenies and I can't stand the format. They also have a degree of censorship and rules to follow which are two of the biggest reasons this site was generated in the first place ... to get away from ANY type of control other than that which we all agree on. I believe we've only used that power once or twice in the history of this place, (once was banning my lunatic brother when he stumbled in here many years ago) and it seems there was another time we did ... or maybe just considered it ... I believe with Mulewriter ... but I really don't remember.

Len mentioned some free boards (below) that takes care of all the maintenance

I just did a quick looksee and .......
Quick topic doesn't have threaded topics. It's a single topic discussion. It looks like each topic has it's own separate page

Boardhost is very similar to this one (example) http://flagcounter.boardhost.com/.

Proboard appears to have the capability for us to export ours over to it.

I ain't ever going to Facebook, not even for you guys. Sorry bro's. Not happenin'. Gotta stick a foot in the ground somewhere.

But you gotta laugh a LITTLE because the actual logical summary of your post is "We don't have a techie now that Cappy passed away". I doubt Larke was any more technical than I am, so that can't be what you meant. I guess he had the passwords to here, or something.

So if he wasn't a techie, and no one else is either really, why not just plod along year after year, pay the piper, and roll merrily along?

Nope, that ain't what I said, the actual quote is:

What many worry about is the fact we no longer have a resident techie available ...
All Cappy did was pay the bills, send me the invoice and I'd reimburse him from the general fund.

In the early days, Gary handled anything technical that came up. But after divorce, a new relationship, job changes, marriage, moving, another divorce, etc, etc, etc. .... he's pretty much moved on and no longer participates here.

The last major issue we had, Foo and Co9 teamed up and got us up and running again. But we've lost Co9 and like Gary, Foo has been pretty much AWOL for years now (although he's checked in a few times since Cappy passed and has offered help).

LJ has handled minor issues in the past, but he too, for the most part, has generally been AWOL and leans more toward the Facebook crowd.

I understand, Go-Daddy has techies who will work to iron out some technical issues, but I have no idea how much they will or can do. Luckily, the site pretty much runs itself and we've had no issues for years ... BUT, the bills still need to be paid and I don't know the process for that. I'll probably be calling Go-Daddy soon, explain our situation and see what suggestions they have. Surely, there's a protocol to handle situations like this.

I'll bet, when the family starts going thru Larke's personal belongings, desk, computer, lock box, etc., those passwords and account info. are gonna miraculously be found.....Larke was a very smart guy, and he certainly saved those passwords, etc. in a safe place.....it may take a while, but you can bank on it. !!!

It's just a hunch, but I'm gonna guess Larke woulda stored something like that in his gun safe.....(after all, GH is hunting related).

Facebook (and Twitter, and TikTok, and Reddit, and yougetthepoint) is just a different interface. If you don't use it, you won't get used to it and if you're looking for reasons to not like it it, guess what you'll find? I'm not pointing my finger at any detractors of Facebook. There's TONS of people with the same attitude and everyone gets to do things like they want. It's fine if you don't like it. I made a choice about a decade ago to not be the old guy clinging to shit yelling about how great the world used to be. That always seemed sad to me. I think I'm doing a pretty good job. Helps keep you young, people. Think about it. The world around us is always changing. If you don't change with it, guess what happens near the end of your life? Life doesn't change to adapt to us as we age. It's the other way around. I bet we all know at least one senior citizen, someone in their 70s or 80s who is full of life and seems much younger than they actually are. This is just one piece of why they are the way they are. Adapting to change in our wonderful world. Learning new things. Finding reason to like things.

All that being said, Facebook is no message board and never will be We should look at one of the alternatives I've already put up there.

Also, the goodhunting domain is not in any way a show stopper. It doesn't matter if it exists or not, if Captain hid the password in a vault, if Gary shuts it down, or it dies all together. It's not in any way a blacker to setting up a new message board. It's just a name. We don't need the domain name to have a message board. We're not some massive site that relies on the thousands, millions of users being able to type a specific domain name in a browser search. We're 25 people that like to chat about stuff in a message board format, give each other hell, and argue about the same shit all the time. There's nothing wrong with that and any message board will fit the bill.
If we all threw our problems in a pile, and you saw everyone else's problems-- you'd take yours back.

You want me to allow all the registration requests we had over the last 2 years in? I get a handful pretty much every single day. Say the word and it's done! 90% were .ru email addresses. The other ones had pharmacy or porn email addresses. Maybe I'll just redirect them all to your personal email address

Just checked email, 7 new registrations just this morning!

    Ha ha! Touché!

Lenster, I have no problem with progress. Every time I buy a new truck, I tell myself I'm keeping this one and just drive the wheels off of it. BUT ... a new style will catch my eye, or new technology will be introduced and I get a case of the "I wants". Next thing I know, I'm trading in a 3 year old vehicle with 7500 miles logged on the odometer. As for new formats for the site, if it works, I'm all for it. Facebook simply does not work FOR ME. I have a close buddy who posts crap all over FB every day. The problem I have is that it simply keeps scrolling along and if I want to find something he posted a couple weeks ago, it's 30 pages down the list. If I comment on it and hope to get a "comment on my comment" (basically reviving the post in a way) it REMAINS 30 pages down the list and keeps sinking deeper and deeper every day, so who's going to participate any longer? I don't check his page daily, but when I do, it's a waste of time commenting on anything more than a few days old because nobody's going to see it anyway. Call me an old man, tell me I'm behind the times and lost in today's new technology, whatever ... but if I don't like Lynn's NEW recipe for boiled okra and oyster casserole, it ain't because it's "new" ... it's because it's simply not for me. It doesn't make me a dinosaur. If you like it, eat it, I have no problem with that.

As for the domain, I realize it can go down the toilet and not affect US ... but I'd imagine it could affect others. What if Helen gets to the point she'd like to check in with us and return to regular posting? She'll Google "GoodHunting" and find one of those pages with a 401 code or whatever that is when I try to find a site that no longer exists. Maybe it doesn't work that way, I don't know. My name has been the same for 69 years now ... to change it to Darryl tomorrow would be more than I'd like to deal with, but I could live with it if there were no other option.

Your name has been Daryl a lot longer than you realize

From what you describe as your challenge with facebook, I'm guessing you're not familiar with using the 'notifications' icon. If someone responds to something you've posted, or replied to, your notification icon will light up. Click the icon and you can see what people have responded to in your interactions. If there's no icon, nobody responded, if nobody responded, why would you go look at it again? Like I said, it's not a message board. It's far more interactive and real time. Not the best fit for someone who wants things static and to look the same every time they enter a place.

All good man. You're missing some great stuff with social media. I have a great time sharing stuff with my daughters. If any of us find some funny shit, we always shoot the link in our group text.

I'll start shooting you funny TikTOk videos with feral cats in them!

So, it's a fancy form of email?

I guess what it all boils down to is YOU like Facebook ... I don't care for it. Kind'a like you're a flaming faggot, but I'm not. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Another common misconception. You can cuss a blue streak if you feel like it when you're in a closed private group, which is what the GH facebook page is. You can't post nekkid wimmins if their nipples are showing. Though one group I'm in does it pretty frequently and somehow gets under the radar.

It's becoming pretty obvious you little old ladies just want to clutch your pearls and tut tut at things. Fine by me.
