Weird Monday

Yesterday I got a letter stating that I made too much money in 2023 and I was to refund $17,000+ in social SSA benefits. I was thinking scam so I pulled up my social security account and apparently the IRS had reported to them that I made 148 grand in 2023. Actually I made less than 6000 taxable income. Well I called SSA and was on hold for about 90 minutes and they've got me filling out forms and providing proof of income. They say I need to contact the IRS and straighten it out with them as well which I'm on hold doing right now (been fighting automation since 5 am). Finally got some one and right in the middle of our business the call is dropped. So I start over and right in the middle of this I get a call on the home phone saying it"s Amazon and I have outstanding charges on my card for over a thousand bucks. It was a dead giveaway because I don't have an Amazon card.

As a reformed tax professional, here’s my unsolicited advice. Take detailed notes of dates, times, name, badge number and what was discussed on the phone. Then follow up with a written letter, certified return receipt is best, on anything that was agreed to. The error rate on information provided over the phone by IRS representatives is astronomical.
