Depends on what you want it for. If it's for long range varmit hunting or target shooting get a longer heavier barrel.
If's going to be use to fight off the zombie hords a short barrel 16" works great.
I have a Colt, they seem to be the standard that others try to meet, Colt makes a number of models so any would be good. Some Colts come with a carry handle that's part of the upper unit, some have the carry handle that is removable and some come just as a flat top.
Captain has a S&W and loves it, Bigsky I think has a Rockriver, my son's in the State Police and they just ordered new Sig Sauer's, so there are other good units out there.
Here's mine, it's a Colt HBAR competition target model, great shooter but it is on the heavy side.
The tan one is the SigSauer I have on order.

At that price the Senate has no need to outlaw them. I'd never pay that kind of money for an AR.
That's at LEAST $1500 more than I'd even think of "investing".

Jusr from pictures, I wanted the Remington in. 308 for multi use. It's camo and all, really cool looking. When I handled one at Academy, I at first noticed the fore end felt huge and it was much heavier than I imagined. Cooled me off.
If you are going to buy an AR and then start tricking it out, look at going the route I did last time. Buy a stripped lower, just a piece of cast alum. with a serial #. This is considered the "gun" by ATF and is what you do the background check on. Then go somewhere like Model 1 sales on the net and order everything else you want. Lower parts kit, the barrel, forend, stock, sights, upper, etc. All delivered UPS to your home. Then find a gunsmith to put it together. I'm sure prices are lots more now but I built exactly what I wanted for about $750.00.
If you look around you should be able to find a new unit for $1200 or less, under a grand is possible too.
I've seen them for a lot less than $2500 at recent gun shows. Friend of mine bought a new Colt at Wally World this month for around $1100.

Im finding colts for 1100-1300. A little high I guess but a bushmaster is 850$. I'm willing to go the extra to have a Colt.
Having one built is also an option. Hadn't really thought about that.
Again........get a Ruger Mini 14. It's a real gun, it will make you the envy of all your friends, it shoots stuff real good, and it looks more like a gun. And it costs less. You'll be happier, you'll thank me, and life will be good.

Bucky, big difference between wanting a rifle that will shoot .223 or 5.56 and wanting an AR. Mini 14 IS a great rifle. But it ain't an AR-15.

I have a Mini-14 (Ranch), which is one of the big reasons I have not gotten an AR. I already have one .223 that I don't shoot much....LOL. One GOOD thing about the Mini is that it is chambered for either .223 or 5.56 (like most AR's) even though the barrel says 223. Also, units made after 1994 have a 1:9 twist barrel (like most AR's).
That said though.....if I didn't already have a .223 I'd prolly be itching bad to get an AR.
I bought a Mini-14 in the mid 70's ('76-'77 I think) and sold it in the mid-80's to buy sumpin' else. It was a fun gun to shoot and accurate as all get-out, but I've just never liked the look of a military style rifle for some reason. No clue why. I couldn't even imaging myself wanting an AR.
