    trapping lessons

My son Luke(12) is getting his first trapping lesson this weekend. The college boys we hunt with are taking him out and showing him how to get a few coons. The boys use their trapping money for extra cash. We are hitting the ducks in the morning, then swinging by the traps to check them. they will set a few more and show Luke how to do so. Luke will then run the small line over Christmas break.
These kids are salt of the earth good kids. Great role models for my son.

On a funny note. Luke showed up for basketball practice over Thanksgiving break in full camo and face paint. Coach said it was the first time any kid had done that in 18 yrs of coaching. We were out duck hunting until pract started. Luke ran in, and changed, washed his face off, but of course didn't get it all. We all had a good laugh about his make up running during practice.
We went back out and planned on hunting more after pract, but the ducks were done for the day so we just picked up dekkes. What a hoot!

Now's a good time to get him started. Fur prices are finally going back up. I ran a pretty decent trap line when I was in high school. I grew up on a large lake, so I trapped muskrats, and then had several ponds that I could trap for them as well. I also did pretty good with the coon and even got an occasional fox.

Back then the rats were bringing around $8 a piece without being stretched and dried and the coon started out at $25, and I had several really big ones that I got up to $40 for. The fox brought in about $50 for a gray and $80 for a red.

I made enough that I bought my first car with my trapping proceeds.

Hey, pictures show up here too?

As for trapping, I did it while in high school as well and have to say I really miss it. Hard work but a lot of fun too.

    Pictures?

If you turn a dog loose to hunt – you’d better to be ready to deal with what he trees.
