    2014 Outdoors Resolutions

I figured out a long time ago that the only kinds of new years resolutions I can ever stick to are ones that have some enjoyment tied to them. Like several years ago my resolution was to fish in every month of the year. Since then, I'll bet I've not missed over two months in any given year. And then there was the one to learn to fish with ultralite spinning tackle vs baitcasters. Done, fini, and its about all I fish with now, much more enjoyably thank you. And then there was the skinny water resolution and I've fished much more local, good, clear water since then.
This year I'm going all out, and resolving to learn to fly fish this year. It might get me into big trouble as new phases like with me usually means A bunch of new stuff has to be snuck into the garage. But hey, its cheaper and easier that losing those 20pounds i've needed to the last twenty years.

    What's yore's?

Ps....oh and read more. That's an every year one. Already got a greatstart on the years with the Brown Dog novellas. Good stuff! And written by an Amurican too!

    Read less, fish more.
    Fish new waters.
Learn to jig fish (at least some).
    Fish more.
Build a bridge over a creek at the farm.
Put up 4 new stands. Make decent shooting lanes at all 5 farm stands.
    Fish more.
Get the stinking 'connected' broke down old mobile home off of the farmhouse and hauled off!!
    Camp more.
    Fish more.
    Squirrel hunt.
    Fish more.
WARNING - Due to the rising costs of ammunition, warning shots will no longer be given.

I'm going for the tough one ... to lose weight. Since I was released from the hospital, I've gained 80 pounds! 'Course, that's a bit misleading, because I lost a ton of weight during hospitalization and actually needed to gain a few pounds anyway. Problem is, I gained 'em back and didn't STOP gaining.

I have no clue what I "need" to lose, but I "want" to lose at least 50 lbs. Ha! Fat chance! (no pun intended)

That said, I'm craving sushi today, so I called Lynn and we're meeting for lunch at my favorite AYCE Sushi joint here in town. (hey, it's not next year yet!)

Edit: Ooops! Just realized you said "outdoors resolutions". I just want to be able to GET outdoors more!

My goal is to camp outside at least one night in every month. I almost did it two years ago when I did every month, but February. That's a tough month in these parts and I may just have to pitch my tent in the backyard to pick it up.

To pheasant hunt more with my old dog as neither of us is getting any younger and it just isn't fair to let such a great talent (her, not me) get so little use.

Then again I would like to get back into bowhunting a bit with my youngest boy, after getting my daughter through hunters safety class I would like to spend some time sitting beside a good duck slough, and given my oldest is going off to college next fall, I'm all game for doing anything out and about with him too.

    Got a few:
    1. Get to Canada this yerar. Heck it is only 2 and a half hours away... via Detroit. I'd love to just drive up hauling the boat and freelance for some Canada walleyes, eh? Spend a few nights and come home. Don't have a clue how far out of Windsor I'd have to go to pull it off... but its a goal.
    2. Head to NoDak for a duck hunt. Our school system decided to add a long weekend fall break: a 4 day weekend. If Luke and I left Thurs after school and drove all night, we could be huntng Friday morning, Sat, and Sun and be back to school on tues.
    3. Catch a big freaking pike. eluded me for years. gonna get one.
    Happy new year all

Though I haven't really waterfowl hunted much in years hotshot, I think I could provide you with some insight on #2 though timing is everything up here.

Posthole, you might want to rethink that fly fishing resolution. I'll warn you in advance, it'll ruin you on everything else. All that bass tackle will set in the garage collecting dirtdobber nests and cobwebs. It's like crack when you get in a bed of bluegills with a Betts Trim Gim. Gene will tell you the same thing.

Might be better off losing that weight

I might need that extra floatation, Vince!

And that's one reason I have not picked it up. I know me. My buddy Mallard Fillmore got into it a few years back and he is et totally up. Even showed me a dance step called the San Juan shuffle or somesuch. So I know it has to involve mexican whorehouses. anyway, I'm gonna be asking soon about beginner rigs.

Fly fishing is definitely on my list. Also to get out and hunt more this year. I didn't do too much this year since I had just moved an everything was packed away.

    1. Spend more time with my kids outdoors.
    2. Learn to fly fish.
    3. Lose weight.
    4. Spend more time fishing than hunting. (That will be a first)
    5. Get hard-core into photography.

Get your ass home in January and we'll go hit White River. I know Trav and Jean and Paul are primed for it.

In January I'll be in Hawaii for a week working, and plan on doing some fishing there too. That White River trip sure is fun though.

Shoot more events in different states
Shoot more practice and events at local clubs
Get back into fishing, rivers and lakes
    Camping places other than shoots
    Buy some bicycles.
The older I get, the better I was. I also forget my password and have to have Len reset it for me

lol.. ahh the fly-fishing. Just had a young friend ask me this summer, "Do you fish with anything but a fly-rod anymore?" I thought a minute and said, "Yep, catfishing and through the ice."

disclaimer: I do occasionally, especially when fishing with other people... but I seldom go fishing without one. It's a bad habit.

My standard resolution was always, "I plan to get in a little more hunting and fishing." I stated it one year in the local restaurant and the 80+ year-old church deacon sitting next to me asked, "What - are they putting more days in the year?"
If you turn a dog loose to hunt – you’d better to be ready to deal with what he trees.

1: Fish more often. Since I discovered last summer how good bass are when filleted and fried, I wanna stock up on them. Plus, I've been saying for several years that I need to take some of the catfish out of my pond. This may just be the year for that chore!

2: Shoot more often. Whether it be handgun shooting at the local indoor range, or shooting my rifle(s) down at The Farm, I aim to get more trigger time in this year. I also need to do some minor gusmithing on a couple of units.

Odd how some things never seem to "go away" and just stick around this joint forever, huh? Kinda like my "pink pants".

With all these fishing goals so many of us have, it's too bad we don't have a fishing forum.

I was thinking that same thing. Folks pretty much voted that one down with their feet though.

New New Year's resolution ... how 'bout building a Fishing Forum for this joint? Ya' think anybody would go there? (I mean, IF we had one).

I'ma learn a new fishing knot and try my braided line with a flouro leader. I'm certain that's the only thing preventing me boating a 23" smallmouth

Len, have you seen the fishing knot apps you can get on your phone or ipad? Proknot is a good one. I tried to teach myself dropshot fishing this past year (still a VERY early work-in-progress) and used this for the Palomar because for some reason I cannot remember that damned easy ass knot.

That's funny, we must be on the same wavelength. I tried dropshotting for the first time this year too.

Dropshotting? Is that anything like tea bagging?

The Palomar is for when the hook doesn't need to move around on the line.........like Texas rigging plastic worms.

The "Jerry Williams" knot is for all other line to hook connections.

    That is all.

The Palomar also makes the hook stand straight out from the line with the gap up and stay that way. A very cool know. I haven't heard of the Jerry Williams. whassat? any kin to Andy?
