It's real ... I've seen it done in a few places around Thailand. There's a big sanctuary up in Surin where paintings are made. I've also been to one up in the Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai area in N.E. Thailand. There's controversy there just like here with circus's ... some people swear the handlers beat the elephants or deprive them of food while teaching them. Animal rights activists are always making all sorts of claims. My personal experience has been that the owners take great care of their animals ... but like with anything, you have the good with the bad. I've just never experienced the bad personally.

Back when I lived there in the early 70's, elephants did most of the logging work ... trucks and heavy equipment do most of it now. When I lived in the village, a neighborhood elephant used to show up at my front door almost every day to pick up my monkey (Chico). The elephant would walk up to my bungalo and bang on the door with his trunk if it was closed. I'd open the door, Chico would run out, climb up on his back and the two of them would take off someplace and play all day. Later in the afternoon, they'd come back and Chico would come in the house to eat and the elephant would ramble off. I don't even know for sure where he lived ... he and Chico were like a couple of the neighborhood kids.

Almost any day of the week, I could look out my window and see a line of elephants walking down the side of the road. I have pics around here someplace. They're really smart animals.

Well, that video you posted was made in Thailand. You should know there are not many places in Thailand I have NOT been to. I used to go to Surin every year for the annual elephant round-up. Just about every elephant in the country would end up there for the round-up and put on all sorts of shows ... mostly to do with logging. The infiltration of heavy logging equipment and the ban on teak logging really cut into the logging elephants and many ended up in sanctuaries doing "shows" for tourists.

The Surin Elephant Round-up usually takes place on the third weekend of November in Surin province, Isan, Thailand. It is of recent origin, first held in 1960. The people of Surin were traditionally excellent at capturing elephants in Cambodia, then training them as working animals. Civil war in Cambodia and the elephant's decreasing economic importance has forced the elephant handlers (mahouts) to turn to entertainment to make a living.

The event consists of a series of shows displaying the strength and skill of the animals, such as football games and tugs of war.

Well that is neat and I had no clue where it was from. In fact I was questioning IF it were real. That's pretty cool up you have been there and seen that, and even neater they can teach elephants to do that.

Ha ha ... ummm, it was pretty tough to figure out. This is what's written just above the video:

2010 Video: Filming an Elephant in Thailand Paint a self portrait of himself, pretty amazing and unique. The portraits were later sold for $60. Someone purchased the painting before the elephant was even done painting it.
