A hunting post for a change

I'm going to try and do something a little different this year.
#3 and I both got doe permits to go with out double buck tags.
Walked the property yesterday and we were excited to see all the fresh scrapes, some of those suckers were better than 4' across.
Opening day will find me with my 308 up in my ladder stand, hope to get a shot at least at one nice buck, we're in a QDM zone so one buck must have at least 3 points on a side, while the second buck requires at least 4 points on a side.
But after opening day I'm switching to my Colt AR and 60 gr. Partitions.
I have the gun, love to shoot it, and just need to justify owning it seeing as the Zombies haven't shown up yet.
I've heard a lot of hunters here and elsewhere have taken deer with a 223 so I figure I should give it a try.
Opening day is the 15th, we have snow in the forecast for the next 5 days, so a good chance of having it for opening day.
The older I get, the better I was. I also forget my password and have to have Len reset it for me

If they do allow rifles next year here, we won't be able to use anything smaller than a 243. 223's won't be allowed.

    Good luck!

We're in the same boat in that we have to use something larger than .223 for deer. If I had an AR, I'd probably just do a lot of predator hunting during deer season.

JB, they discovered a new Fanged Deer in Afghanistan this week. Is that a close enough combo?

Here, any centerfire .22 or larger is fine.

LOTS of deer killed with one of those. Aim for the ear!

I stand corrected. IF you can find a .22 caliber center fire, you can use it.......(.220 swift??)

    Modern Gun

All modern guns may be used during modern gun deer season with the following exceptions. You may not use the following for deer:
    buckshot in a .410 shotgun.
shot smaller than No. 4 buckshot in any shotgun.
rimfire cartridges, military or full-metal jacketed ammunition.
any centerfire rifle or pistol smaller than .22 caliber.
handguns with barrels shorter than 4 inches.
    Air guns.
WARNING - Due to the rising costs of ammunition, warning shots will no longer be given.

A friend of mine's Dad swore a 22 was the best deer poaching gun there ever was. I know of several he killed on his farm with one.

In Arkansas, a .22 Mag is called "Poacher's Pride".

You can change an AR upper to 300AAC Blackout just by changing the barrel out. Uses the same magazines, and ya gets to use 30 cal projectiles!

I've loaded my 222 Remmy with 60GR Nosler Partitions, they work just fine on deer.
