    Weird Fish

So I went ling fishing for my first time Friday after work. They are technically called burbot ling. They have to be about the strangest looking fish I've ever caught. They look like a cross between an amphibian and a fish. They say they taste really good and have the nick name of "poor man's lobster". I guess I will find out soon. It was a super fun night. The only bummer is I was fighting a cold and it's making me really pay for it today. It was worth it though.

    A stringer full of fun.

Ummmm, your camo don't ... well, you know ......!

Those are weird lookin' fish. I remember as a kid I was fishing for catfish one night and reeled in a dang Lamprey. I didn't realize it until I had it in my hand and went to take the hook out of it's mouth. That thing freaked me out when I saw it by the light of the lantern. Kinda scared me actually ... I'd never seen one before that night. Gave me the willies!

Captain caught them on white sucker meat. They fight real strange because the roll a lot while reeling them in. Feels different than any other fish I've caught.

I was just wondering if they put their "feet" down and tried to pop the line. Like Barry said we have grinnels here and they fight like hell. A big grinnel will wreck your mess.

Burbot are members of the cod family and are considered good to eat. Never tried them myself but a bud did and confirmed that.

    Sky,

Here in Washington we make poor man's lobster out of Cod. Take 7-up and boil it in a pot pit the fish in for 3-4 minutes. The 7-up seetend it a bit and gives it the chewy texture of lobster. Kids love it.

What are you eating while your kids are feeding off the very bottom of the food chain?

"Lawyers".. I've caught them through the ice in MN. Dang things will wrap around your arm like snake. First one took me aback a bit.

HideHunter, I have to admit I had a second thought or two before reaching down to pick up the first one. They feel really weird. The only other animal I've ever picked up that felt similar is an octopus.

I bet they'd make good cod balls, too....sorta like our gar balls, down here....good recipe and fine eating!!!

    Cajun Gar Balls

    4 lbs. garfish fillet
    2 med onions, finely chopped
    1/4 cup bell peppers, chopped
    3 ribs of celery, chopped
1 bunch of green onions, chopped
    2 Tbsp. pureed garlic
    2 Tbsp. parsley, chopped
    2 Tbsp. red pepper
    4 Tbsp. Beazell's Cajun Seasoning
    2 cups instant potato flakes
    1/2 cup Italian bread crumbs

Grind fillets with a fine grinding plate. Grind onions, bell pepper, celery and green onions. Add garlic, parsley, red pepper, Beazell's Cajun Seasoning, potato flakes and Italian bread crumbs. Mix well. Roll into balls & deep fry at 325 degrees F until golden brown.

You could substitute 4lbs of Jimmy's bowels and that recipe would make them taste good.

Those are cool fish BS. Look kinda like a snakehead without the mean grill.

Remembering that most of what cajuns eat, comes out of the ditch by the side of the road.
