Story always was "back in the olden days" Dinah Shore had "a lot of 'splainin' to do?" Explanation was she had a black ancestor no one talked about.. I was a well known "fact" at the time..
But I've heard since the whole thing was a rumor started by Lena Horne..
and that could be a rumor too.
Hey! You didn't hear it from me!

Wow Hidey-Ho, you're showing your age! Ha! I hadn't thought about Dinah Shore in years. I remember that rumor. My very "Southern" (from Georgia) grandmother mentioned it when I was a kid. Anytime I think about Dinah, the first thing that comes to my mind is the old advertising song/slogan, "See the USA, in your Chevrolet"!

Ha! Yeah. One time she had Tennessee Ernie Ford on the show and introduced him as "Tennessee Ernie Chevrolet"! (true story)

According to Google:
In the spring of 1993, Shore was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She died of the disease on February 24, 1994, at her home in Beverly Hills, California, five days before her 78th birthday. She was cremated that same day, and her ashes were divided between her two memorial sites. Half were interred in the Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California, and the other half interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery (Cathedral City), near her second home in Palm Springs, California.
