I have tried some seasoned apple I trimmed off of my own apple tree and I was really pleased with it. Not too smoky. I can't remember the last time I used hickory.

I almost never use hickory as the family is not fond of the strong taste. (I like it fine.). For pork, I use apple and for beef I use pecan.
