    Need Advice on a Heater

When we remodeled the kitchen we converted to gas cook stove. When they ran the gas pipe from outside tank to the stove, we had them run it a 'few' more feet to the back room.....that is the coldest room in the house in the winter, and it's getting worse as we get older! So, we had pipe run to a place where the original house had a woodburning stove and and a 'chimney', just a small flue leading through roof, for one of those pellet stoves, long gone.........there it sat, we haven't ever bought a heater.

The back room is big, I don't know how many square feet, but off the top of my head it's probably...........25 X 16..........it's as long as my carport, and maybe 16' wide. That's where we 'live'. And we stay cold back there in the winter.

OK, found this heater for sale for $90.00. Guy is selling cause he moved to the country to an all electric house. This is Natural Gas, and of course I need LP. He doesn't know the brand...or I'd look up specs on internet.

    A) Is this worth it?

    B) Most important, can I get an LP conversion thingy to hook it up to the gas pipe sticking out of wall, and do I need to change orifices? In other words is it worth it?

The short answer is yes. You'll prolly need to get a "heater man'' to put a diff sized "thingy" on it. At one hunting club I belonged to years ago we had a OLD houseplace on it. One of the guys donated an old Atlanta gas heater (natural), and one of the other guys, who was an HVAC, man converted it to run on LP.

All Natural Gas heaters can have LP orifices installed.

    True or False?

Bucky, I'll have to say that I do not know the answer that you seek.
I think it is "yes", but I wouldn't bet money on it....and it is not a job that I myself would attempt at any rate.

You prolly need to call your local propane accessory dealer and ask them.
Call Ferrell, or Amerigas, or if you know an HVAC man...and ask.

Yep, you gotta change the jet(orifice, as you call it), from nat. gas to LP....not a big complicated job, at all, but if I were YOU, I'd have a pro do that, and hook it up and test it, as well.

Bucknutz, have you thought about one of the new quartz-infrared elec. heaters???....the EdenPure is too expensive, but Lowe's carries their own version called Duraflame for about $140....very low energy consumption, and will heat about 1,000 square feet....and, you can roll them around from to room.

I absolutely loathe the smell of any type of gas....I had to sleep by a gas heater, when I was a kid, and it kept me nauseated most of my childhood....I swore I'd never endure that in my adulthood...so, it's all-electric for me, everywhere!!!

Our lakehouse has a LP gas-fired central heat system....I disconnected it, and had the LP tank towed away....I bought two of the Duraflame low-energy quartz heaters from Lowes, and they are perfect for our 2,200 square foot lakehouse....if it's really really cold, we just roll one into the bedroom for the night.

Well, have thought of that, Ed. But I had this LP gas pipe run to that room, and I have never had any issues with gas.......I love gas for cooking.... But yes, your idea might work. It's just not been that cold this year, or last......to have worried with it, really.

And LJ, I dunno what carty's heater is. ????? And no, you ain't me. You're real cute, and all. And younger.

    Gary's "buddy heater", Bucky.

We host my wife's family for Christmas and to give the kids room to play out of everyone else's way, we put one of those Duraflame heaters in my insulated but not heated garage. The garage is a 2 1/2 car and it heats it up nicely for the kids to play out there.

Bucky, if I had to guess, I'd say it's something like this....since Cabelas call 'em "buddy heaters."
