    Looks like what we call a ground rattler. Some folks might call them pygmies. The ones i’ve seen were almost always in the pines and they were a little grayer than that. And 10 inches might be accurate. They also have little black rattles.
    That’s my official guess.

    P-hole, when I saw the pic, that was my first guess. But once I read Mudward's story, I figured there'd be no way anybody could be confused about what kind of snake they were dealing with if it had rattles on it's tail! (unless they were just plum ignernt!)
