    Homemade Ice Cream, last night....

We had an ice cream party last night at church, as a going-away for one of our married couples....one of our old widows brought in an old rickety wooden ice cream churn, full of the best homemade ice cream that I've ever eaten.
She gladly gave me her recipe, if yall want to try it some time:

    >1 gal. whole milk
    >2 cans eagle brand condensed milk
    >4 eggs
    >4 cups sugar
    >2 Tbsp. vanilla extract
    >2 Tbsp. cool whip

Someone else brought a churn full of watermelon ice cream, which was pretty darn good, too.

    Four cups of sugar, whew!

Sounds a lot lot like my Mom's ice cream recipe except for the cool whip.

I sure miss the days of home made ice cream! The kid's jobs of course were to sit on the blanket or towel that was over the ice cream maker while it was being cranked.

I make it all the time. My favorite is Vietnamese Coffee flavor. Of course, it's all electric now.

My granddad's old wooden bucket finally rotted away years ago. I was in an Amish store the other day and saw one on the top shelf. I told the wife, "I just may buy that thing".... $365.. eh.. maybe not. *Then* I walked around the corner and here was one half-again the size of a 30 gallon drum; looked like it was made to hook up to a pto... $1250... Think those Amish make more money than I do.

Do you have a countertop model or the old bucket? I love gelato. Might have to try it.

Barry, I use a countertop electric model, I can shoot you the recipe if you want. QA not a big pumpkin latte guy but I do enjoy a nice pumpkin ale in the fall.

Man-o-man, it's been a loooong time since we used to take turns turning the crank on my Granny's ice cream maker. I have no clue what her recipe was, but after looking at the recipe above, it "seems" like it would taste the way Granny's did. But like P-hole ... without the Cool Whip. Heck, come to think of it, I don't know if Cool Whip had even been invented back then.

Dang, you food safety guys are eating raw eggs ? The bacteria in salmonella can only be killed by cooking, not freezing !

More vanilla than you think is right

    Thump's recipe:

Go to Kroger freezer/dairy section, pick up gallon tub of ice cream, take home, enjoy!

If they had the right labels on it, so that I know what I was really eating, I'd do the same.

Until then, I will make it
