I might try to plant a dove field next summer. Do you guys have any advice? What's the minimum size? What type of seed, fertilizer, herbicide, etc. to you use?

This works for me....I'm sure Cap has some tips, too:
> 5 to 10 acre field
> Mycogen Hybrid Confectioner Sunflower seed - plant on 38" rows @ rate of 10 lbs. / acre
> Select or Avatar grass herbicide at rate of 1 pint per acre, applied in 10 gals. of water, as needed.
> 150 lbs. of Urea fertlizer at 12 inch height, then another 150 lbs. at first bloom.

Thanks! I've been doing some internet research, but it's good to hear straight from the horses mouth. Now, I've just got to figure out how to run our cranky old tractor...

First off let me say that Muddy does it RIGHT. his advice is worth more than mine. That said I'll tell you how I do it. I've got two food plots, one about 2 acres and one about an acre in size. I burn them down with Roundup and let everything die out. Then I bushhog them. Then about it the 2nd week in June I till them with a 7 foot rotortiller I have. I then spread as much lime and fertilizer as my pocketbook will let me do. Next I spread seed heavy on the plots. I take the rotortiller and set it shallow and till seed, lime and fertilizer in all at once.
A few weeks before dove season a start bushhogging it little by little and spray the ground with roundup...
I have some pretty sunflowers with 10 heads.

Do you just broadcast seed it? Is the roundup treatment when you bushhog it because the doves prefer bare ground? Do you guys recommend any particular variety of seed?

Doves love bare ground, I buy whatever seed Southern States has at the time I need them. Yes I broadcast them and then till them in with a rotor tiller. This is not the correct planting method, but you can see the pictures of the results. I'm happy with them.
Muddy posted the correct method. I just sorta SWAG it but it works for me. I get tons of doves in.

Thanks. BM's way is what I've been reading, but would require an investment in additional equipment I'm not sure I could get the old guard at my hunt club to invest in. Do you get turkey and deer browsing in there as well?

Deer when they first come up. Turkeys when the seed accidentally fall out....
